Abstract: To acquire the precise appearance feature of free-form curved surface, an adaptive planning strategy for sample points of free-form curved surface, which combines the principle of circular interpolation and the self-organising characteristics of material centre theorem, is presented, and a solution algorithm suitable for surface digitising is proposed. The experimental results show that the adaptive planning algorithm for sample points of free-form curved surface is simple. It makes up the distribution defects of sample points based on circular interpolation, and avoids the enormous resource consumption in solving the complex non-linear equations. The sample points could distribute well according to the surface appearance characteristics, and the distribution of sample points under the required planning accuracy can be found via iteration.
