Industrial development in North Africa: a comparative analysis for the period 2004-2012

Abstract: This article examines the status of industrial development in North Africa during the period 2004-2012. The objective is to find out whether, during a period of relatively significant economic growth of the African continent followed by a global crisis, the industrial sector of the North African region has experienced significant changes which have underpinned its growth. We carry out a comparative analysis with other selected developing regions, based on a set of key indicators relating to the industrial production and trade of manufactured products using internationally comparable datasets for the reference period. Our analysis indicates that the manufacturing base of the region remains weak. Our study contributes to understand the status and the patterns of structural transformation of the North African region and proposes recommendations.
