Abstract: In the current age, automotive industry faces multiple challenges like stringent emission norms, surging fuel prices, and need for better fuel-efficiency. Among available options for transmission systems, Automatic and Automatic manual transmission systems (Single-clutch) are in demand despite manual transmission returning better fuel-efficiency, due to ease of driving, but they lack performance and driving comfort. To overcome these challenges, dual-clutch transmission systems, a type of Automatic manual transmission system with two clutches is used. There are two shafts on which the gears are mounted and this allows the gear to be shifted without disengaging the drivetrain from the engine, which results in uniform acceleration of the vehicle. The advantages include better fuel-efficiency, performance, and better ride-comfort. This literature work focuses on the evolution, classification, components, lubrication technologies, controllers, and control strategies involved in the operation, existing systems with case studies, and comparison of dual-clutch transmission with other types of systems.
