Abstract: The current research on smart factory emphasises the emergence of new characteristics of manufacturing processes, such as small batches and personalisation. With regards to personalisation and customisation, the studies commonly focus on three aspects: software-defined industrial wireless sensor network technology, edge computing, and the production line coordination mechanism for an intelligent manufacturing plant. The paper aims to investigate and summarise the current state-of-the-art. The efficient data transmission, collaborative edge-cloud, and production line mechanisms are discussed peculiarly. The review of the industrial internet of things for the services of smart factory is guidance for future studies.
Keywords: industrial internet of things; smart factory; software-defined networks; edge computing; industrial wireless sensor networks; cyber-physical production system.
