Abstract: This study aims to explore the current export determinants for SMEs in Jordan and how these determinants influence the export performance by focusing on firms mainly exporting to the Middle East and Europe. The study is based on the qualitative multi-case study research approach. The case study data were collected from 30 SMEs managers/owners. The findings have identified that export performance is negatively influenced by political environment, technological environment, economic environment, firm capabilities, and export marketing, whereas it is positively influenced by firm size, and the firm's previous experience. The study will help policymakers in putting the policies for SMEs to be able to remove the exports' obstacles while enhancing SMEs owners and managers' awareness of the internationalisation barriers, thus aiding them to find appropriate export assistance from the government. Furthermore, the originality of this study lies in the new context in which it was conducted.
Keywords: export performance; Jordanian SMEs; Europe; Middle East; international business; export barriers.
