Abstract: Small companies are playing an increasing role in innovation, which poses competitive threats to large businesses. Minimising these threats requires large companies to consider the advantages and peculiarities of innovative activities of small companies, as well as the development of an appropriate innovation strategy. The article aims to determine the competitive advantages of small and medium-sized companies over corporations in creating different types of innovations. It was found that small and medium-sized companies are more effective in creating the architectural type of innovation, which involves the creation of a new product through significant reconfiguration of existing technologies and components. The study was conducted using analysis and comparison methods, Pearson's test of agreement. The results of the study can be used in the practice of corporate governance, as well as in developing strategies for state regulation of innovation in developed countries.
