Abstract: The effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of garjan, rain tree, and gmelina commercially available woods in South Asia is studied. The wood samples are heat treated isochronally for two hours at different temperatures up to 250°C. Evaluation of mechanical properties has been performed by hardness, tensile, compressive and impact tests. Main findings show that the increasing of heat treatment temperature proportionally degrades the mechanical properties of wood except hardness improvement up to 150°C. The decrease of these tensile, compressive and impact property are caused by lower moisture content, evaporation of extractives during heating and vanishing of degradation products of wood components cellulose and especially the hemicelluloses. To supplement the optical behaviour of the experimental wood, samples are also made which follows the decline-like scenario in mechanical properties under heat treatment. The microstructural study confirms that fracture along with cavities within the wood cell wall of the experimental woods occurs through the thermal degradation.
