Abstract: Free-form magnetic abrasive finishing (FFMAF) is an abrasion-based advanced surface finishing process used to finish free-form surfaces of various industrial applications. This paper presents the development of the FFMAF process and experimental investigations in the application of FFMAF for finishing the surfaces of bearing races. The aim of this study is to overcome the current surface quality limitations of bearing races which were finished by the honing process. The Indigenous FFMAF process was developed and mounted on a VMC machine as an attachment for high-efficiency finishing. To analyse the performance of the process, Experiments were conducted on bearings races made from AISI 52100 bearing steel. Optimisation was performed using response surface methodology. The effect of different process parameters on surface roughness was investigated and a surface roughness of 17nm was achieved at optimal conditions in finishing of bearing races.
