Abstract: The main objective of this work is to make a synthesis of the geotechnical aspects related to the storage of mining waste. Besides, to give a brief overview of tailings dam failures considering different loading conditions to which they were subjected to during the different stages of the mining operation, design, operation, closure, and post closure. The tailings must be characterised to know their physical, chemical, and mechanical behaviour in order to determine the necessary parameters for the design of the deposit. Furthermore, a case history of a tailings dam located in Peru is depicted considering seepage and slope stability behaviour. Finally, comments and conclusions of this investigation are presented.
