Abstract: As emphasised by United Nations in SDG 11, urban transport can be one of the areas to be focused to make cities inclusive and sustainable. Considering the dearth of research in emerging countries like India, this study attempts to identify reasons for adoption and non-adoption of public transport services. For this purpose, two separate studies were conducted: (a) one focusing on commuters and (b) the other focusing on non-commuters. The variables important for commuters were factor analysed to identify important areas to be focused. The paper also attempts to report the reasons for non-adoption of public transport service by non-commuters and to segment the non-commuters based on their reasons of non-adoption. It has strong implications for the policymakers, which have been discussed at the end.

Keywords: public transport; sustainability; sustainable development; commuters; SDGs; sustainable development goals.
