Abstract: Traditional methods of teaching accounting relegate students to passive learning roles. In an attempt to shift from a passive to an active learning environment, a cooperative learning format was introduced. Cooperative learning has been found superior to the traditional competitive class environment in terms of learning and interpersonal skill enhancement in studies involving primarily elementary and middle school students. In this article, the authors report student perceptions concerning cooperative learning in the collegiate managerial and cost accounting classrooms. The reported perceptions suggest that cooperative learning in the business school classroom enhances both objective and subjective learning and increases communication skills.
Keywords: Cooperative learning; accounting; subjective learning; accounting classroom; communication skills.
