Abstract: Although NAFTA is generally expected to produce positive results, it has been proposed that Mexicans and Americans are often wary and unaccepting of each other due to cultural differences. This study empirically examines the nature of these cultural differences. The study finds that acceptance of foreign nationals by Americans is directly related to the individualistic nature of the culture of the home country from which the foreign nationals come; the more individualistic the culture, the more Americans accept them. Through a recognition of the precise nature of the cultural differences, steps can be taken to develop lasting social acceptance and economic prosperity between the United States and Mexico.

Keywords: Cultural differences; NAFTA; social acceptance; economic prosperity.
