Abstract: This study draws upon configuration theory and the resource based view of the firm to better understand the relationship of strategic planning and performance. There is partial support for the prediction that there is a positive relationship between strategic planning and performance and that this relationship is negatively moderated by organizational stage of development. It is proposed that strategic planning is beneficial to early stage firms because of the structure and future thinking it provides. In addition, strategic planning may be less beneficial to late stage firms because the processes are imitable and the competitive advantage is more prone to erosion.
Keywords: Strategic planning; competitive advantage; configuration theory; resource-based view; organizational stage.
