Abstract: The purpose of this study was to provide some much needed empirical data regarding problems associated with the design and implementation of merit pay plans in higher education institutions. The sample consisted of approximately five hundred faculty members drawn from different academic disciplines from four-year universities in the U.S. This study identified four significant problems typically associated with merit pay plans. The current study also revealed that some individual-level and organizational-level variables moderated or influenced faculty members' perceptions of problems with their merit pay plans. The implications of the current findings are discussed, and some recommendations are offered.
