Abstract: This study examines female membership on core corporate board committees (audit, compensation, and nominating). Individual committee characteristics were examined to determine whether gender influences core committee membership. Results show mixed support for the study's hypothesis. Specifically, females are more likely to serve as members of the nominating and audit committees but less likely to serve as members of the compensation committee after controlling for experience. The study also evaluates the relationship between firm level characteristics and the likelihood of having female core committee members. Results suggest that larger firms are more likely to have female core committee members, while rapidly growing firms are less likely to have female core committee members.
