Abstract: The Department of Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) is an unusual department in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. It focuses on problems in technology and public policy in which the technical issues are of central importance. EPP began as an undergraduate program in 1970 and became an academic department in 1976. At the graduate level, the department offers a research-oriented PhD for students with backgrounds in science and engineering. This paper briefly summarises the history of the department, discusses the institutional arrangements, which allow it to function, describes the academic programs and briefly summarises current research.
