Abstract: Managing the early phase of project development in a proactive manner calls for an articulated and coherent set of organisational mechanisms, managerial principles, methods and technology. Design for supply/demand distribution (transportation) network refers to the planning of distribution systems geometrical layouts. This constitutes the early conceptual phase of the project life cycle. As the early conceptual phase is of strategic importance, the planning of geometrical configuration (layout) inevitably becomes an important factor in a project environment. Research in artificial intelligence has had significant impact on the formulation and solution to computational methods in engineering design. This paper proposes generalised representation of a supply/demand distribution system by an artificial neural network model. A case study of planning and design for such distribution system is used to illustrate the conceptual framework of this approach.
