Abstract: Deployment and development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Korea has been regarded as |a textbook case| in the backdrop of her spectacular economic growth at the turn of the last century. The increase in economic prosperity instigated greater mobility and a subsequent exponential increase of its vehicular traffic that has far outpaced the infrastructure supply resulting in augmented congestion, chaos, accidents and environmental degradation. The limitation of the conventional offsetting measures triggered the adoption of state-of-the-art technology in Korea. This paper provides a retrospective overview of ITS development plans with the intention to facilitate the policymakers and practioners working to deploy and mange the technology in their own backyard.
