Abstract: The nature of the electronic mass media in China is explained first. The development achieved over the past 10 years, particularly in the broadcasting industry, as a result of implementation of the policies of opening to the outside world and reform of economic and political structures is then described. Statistics show that the number of broadcasting stations, transmitters and retransmitters and receiving apparatus has been multiplied by several or even several dozens times in the past 10 years. The many functions of the various electronic mass media have been brought into play as a result of the action of the governmental organs at different levels. The achievements since the beginning of the 1980s are described. These consist of comprehensive use of various technical means in the fields of programme transmission and distribution, terrestrial coverage networks and programme production for the purpose of enhancing effectivness of dissemination. The prospects for new technologies in China in the near future is then presented. The last two sections of the paper are devoted to a review of the assimilation of foreign technology and experience and the development of many-sided international cooperation and exchange in the past and thoughts about the future implementation of the reform and open policies, and the strengthening of international cooperation and exchange on the part of the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television, of the People|s Republic of China.
