Abstract: This paper aims to partially automate the detection of conflicts among Application Protocols (APs) of the STEP data exchange standard. It is based on a proposed model for measuring the similarity between two data entities represented in the data modelling language EXPRESS. The similarity model considers both structural factors and attribute similarity. Structural factors include the depth of the inheritance hierarchy, supertype–subtype relations, subtype–subtype relations, and subtype inclusiveness. The information gathered during similarity/conflict detection can then be used to generate automatically a partial mapping between the APs in question.
Keywords: Application protocols; STEP; data exchange; EXPRESS.
