Abstract: This article expands recent advances in entrepreneurial cognition research by initiating a conversation between the two fields of institutional entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship. After defining the concepts in accordance with the current literature, it builds on extant research to provide a comparative review of the two fields and outline how they can inform each other. Finally, it offers views about gaps and overlaps and identifies the areas where further research is most likely to go. It shows that an integration of the two strands of literature may provide a methodology to find answers to hitherto unresolved issues.
Keywords: institutional entrepreneurship; entrepreneurial cognition; small and medium-sized enterprises; SMEs; entrepreneurs.
