Abstract: The status of aquatic environmental parameters like dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity and alkalinity etc. were examined in the six ponds located at Khar Land Research Station Farm at coastal district Raigad, Maharashtra, India in relation to fish culture. The study was conducted for two years 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. In the first year, the dissolved oxygen ranged from 4.95 mg/l to 5.75 mg/l; pH 8.1 to 8.6; temperature 24.5°C to 25.5°C; alkalinity 47-142.4 mg/l; salinity 2.5-10 ppt; nitrite-nitrogen 0.25-0.27 mg/l; nitrate-nitrogen 0.29-0.35 mg/l; phosphate 0.045-0.10 mg/l while in the second year, dissolved oxygen was in the range of 4.38-5.46 mg/l; temperature 25.3°C to 28.2°C; pH 7.43-7.58; salinity 11.41-21.66 ppt. The investigation revealed remarkable fluctuation in parameters like alkalinity and salinity. The wide fluctuation recorded in pond salinity indicated the suitability of water for culture of euryhaline fishes.
