Abstract: STI and DUI modes introduced by Jensen et al. summarise the innovation modes most scientifically. Based on the Danish firms| empirical data Jensen et al. (2004, 2007) provided, this paper analyses the complementarity between the STI and DUI modes using the complementarity theory-based approach. The result shows that the relationship between the STI and DUI modes is non-critical symmetric complementarity. The STI-mode and DUI-mode contribute to innovation respectively. However, further innovation performance can be achieved by combining the two modes. The paper also explores the complementary innovation mechanism between the STI and DUI modes referring to contemporary theories on knowledge learning.
