Abstract: This paper has studied the feasibility of applying World Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) based Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) in monitoring wind farms. WMNs provide a dynamic topology which meets the requirements of communications in wind farms. The architecture of the network and protocols at each layer are designed for providing communications in wind farms. Simulation results on Network Simulator Version 2 (NS2) show that it is feasible to apply this emerging wireless networking technology in wind farm communications. This could be a revolutionary approach for the design of future communications in wind farms, particularly for those in isolated areas or offshore.
