Abstract: Radio frequency identification (RFID) has emerged as a technology that promises many desirable benefits to consumers as well as businesses. The technology has the capability of tracing the product throughout its entire life cycle. The technology has also been perceived by some as one of the most invasive surveillance technology raising concerns about consumer privacy and health. In this paper, we provide a brief overview of the RFID technology, its applications in selected areas, along with some challenges it faces as it makes further inroads into present and emerging application areas.
