Abstract: New innovative synthesis and processing methods for the production of improved aerospace alloys and composites are required to enhance system performance. Examples of emerging technologies will be drawn from ingot metallurgy using advanced zone refining techniques, powder metallurgy/mechanical alloying, processing via the vapour phase (using both plasma and electron beam techniques), thermochemical processing (use of hydrogen as a temporary alloying element), titanium aluminide intermetallics, and composite concepts.
Keywords: aerospace alloys; aerospace composites; mechanical alloys; vapour phase processing; ingot metallurgy; advanced zone refining; powder metallurgy; mechanical alloying; thermochemical processing; titanium aluminide intermetallics.
