Abstract: The major materials of civil engineering are cement and concrete, bricks, metals such as steel and aluminium, and wood; other materials such as polymers, rubbers, bitumen, etc., have a lesser role but are significant because of their special properties. This Note considers these in turn and discuss developments and applications of traditional and new materials.
