Abstract: Some of the present limits on the improvement of existing materials and the development of new ones can be overcome if the materials can be given a nanocrystalline structure. Utilizing this new |solid state|, ceramics can be made ductile even at room temperature, composite materials can be taken close to the limits of their theoretical strength and other physical properties can be modified and tailored to meet specific requirements.
