Abstract: At present 80-90% of the material weight of motor cars is made up of steel and aluminium. The remaining 10% or so is organic material. This paper looks into how far it is expected that new materials – plastics, ceramics and fibre reinforced metal – can be expected to replace the conventional materials, and how new steels and other alloys are expected to find applications.
