Abstract: During the summer months, the Milan metropolitan area is regularly affected by intense photochemical pollution episodes. They are often associated to high concentrations of particulate matter. The attention paid to PM concentration measurements, to the related health effects and simulation results have been recently increased and new models for atmospheric dispersion are now available. To study the PM role in atmospheric pollution throughout the Lombardia region, two modelling systems (GAMES and REMSAD 5.0) have been applied. The ozone episode occurred in the first ten days of June 1998 has been monitored by the second Intensive Observation Period of PIPAPO campaign. This episode has been studied using with both modelling systems. The results for PM10, PM sulphates, PM nitrates and ozone have been compared to measurements in the area.
