Abstract: This paper discusses manufacturing methods for surfaces of simple to freeform geometry and the need to control the form and surface topography. Measurement techniques for assessment of form error and surface topography are outlined. At the end, engineered surfaces are taken and examined in the same context. This paper is intended to be only a concept paper, since enormous literature is available on this topic and critical reviews are published from time to time.
