Abstract: A survey into the incidence of occupant ejection in motor accidents is presented. Although ejection is uncommon, the severity of injuries suffered by ejected occupants is often far greater than that suffered by belted occupants in comparable accidents. Both front and rear occupants have an equal chance of being ejected in a crash, and it is therefore recommended that all occupants should wear seat belts.
Keywords: vehicle safety; occupant ejection; injury severity; seat belts; accident statistics; motor accidents.
