Abstract: The objective of this paper is to identify the trends and the criteria, that will determine the energy and environmental requirements of the twenty-first century, and to propose a structure for responding to those requirements. The structure of an Integrated Energy System (IES) provides a new paradigm for the structure of future energy systems. An IES assumes an integration or connection of input fuels to output demands through a set of transformation processes that produce industrially useful gases. An IES is not so much a new system, as a new way of viewing existing systems. New Integrated Energy Systems can be evolved from existing technologies; examples are given of systems that are evolving and adapting in this way.
