Abstract: This paper reports the results of the study of biogas purification from a sanitary landfill in the city of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, which was closed in 2010. The biogas was collected at two different points of the site, one where municipal solid waste had been over ten years (point 1) and another where the waste was disposed off around five years (point 2). The purification was done through columns containing lead acetate solution (2% m•v−1) and sodium hydroxide solution (3% m•v−1), followed by percolation through silica gel and activated carbon granules. Levels of methane collected in points 1 and 2 had an average increase of 94% and 57%, corresponding to lower calorific values of 5,461 kcal•kg−1 and 8,601 kcal•kg−1 respectively, after purification.
