This special issue introduces state-of-the-art innovative and advanced tools and techniques for developing and maintaining large-scale software systems. Recent progress, ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of software engineering and its application will be discussed, providing developers with a guide for choosing which tools and methodologies would be most appropriate for solving large-scale software problems.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the Advanced Software Engineering and Its Applications conference (Jeju Island, Korea; see http://www.sersc.org/ASEA2010/), but we also strongly encourage researchers who did not participate in the conference to submit papers to this special issue.
