Abstract/Summary: In today's product development processes emphasis is laid on how to reduce the total product development cycle time and costs related to building products. Companies which are looking for an advantage over their competitors lay emphasis on how to reduce the product development cycle time, time to market and costs related to the entire product development process. This is sometimes done by building a product platform, which is a set of common components, modules, or parts from which a stream of derivative products can be efficiently made and introduced in the market. While studies have been made to benchmark product platforms, and to define product platforms in terms of subsystems and components and to find its relation with product architecture, little work has been done in relation to the reuse of components from the different subsystems in a typical product platform extension or renewal case. This paper presents a methodology to extract and reuse components from a product platform keeping in mind the different component dependencies that may arise due to design or technical considerations
