Abstract/Summary: The issue of international competitiveness and technological development has become central to the 1980s debate. There is a vast literature on the relationship between technological change and economic performance, however since there is a general acceptance about Middle East and North African (MENA) countries’ weak economic performance on high technology, empirical studies are limited. Therefore, this paper deals with the changes of MENA countries over the past two decades in the trade of high-technology industries. According to our calculations, a strong specialisation in a very limited number of industries can be found in some of the MENA countries.
