Abstract/Summary: This paper describes the construction of an ontology to model the diabetes disease, as an attempt of applying ontologies in the biomedical domain. The disease (in terms of symptoms, complications, types and risk factors) is modeled and all the required information is captured. Given a scenario of a patient with specific symptoms, existing risk factors and lab results, through inference mechanisms the ontology will classify the type of diabetes the patient has; and suggest the needed treatment plan. This work also describes the methodology used to construct our ontology. A set of criteria, and metrics have been defined and applied to evaluate our ontology.
