Abstract/Summary: The article illustrates how the idea of product lifecycle management (PLM) influences and moreover dominates the Y-CIM (computer integrated manufacturing) model. Thereby the advancing integration and/or coupling of the corporate information systems lead from the authors' perspective into two scenarios. Firstly, the systems will not only be small meshed at the production level but also in the planning level. This leads, however, in a multitude of cases to redundancies in data storage as well as in the functional areas. More likely, however, is the use of product data management (PDM) systems as integration platforms for all participating systems. Modem PDM systems allow to reference, to share, to modify and to manage data, information systems and processes within system's boundaries. PDM systems provide upon adequate integration or coupling of adjacent corporate information systems the ability to define and implement new integrated functions increasing the efficiency of the overall contribution. This iterative implementation is not well suited for the first scenario, due to the enormous number of interfaces. The latter architecture is therefore moreover suitable as a basis for the development of trendsetting enterprise information system architectures.
