Special Issue on: "Concurrent Engineering in Product and Service Solutions"

Concurrent engineering (CE), as a concept, initiates processes with the goal of improving product quality, production efficiency and overall customer satisfaction. The definition of a product has evolved from manufacturing and supplying goods only to providing goods with added value, and to eventually promoting a complete service business solution with support from introduction to service, then from operations to decommissioning.

Services are becoming increasingly important to the economy: the service industry has grown significantly, and even companies that fall outside of the traditional service industry are more and more reliant on service-based business. For example, in Japan, the USA, Germany and Russia, more than 60% of the GDP stems from service-based activities.

The 20^th ISPE International Conference on Concurrent Engineering (2-5 September 2013) carried the theme Product and Service Engineering in a Dynamic World and included papers which present recent research results, new concepts and insights that cover the conference topics or more specifically the theme of the conference. This issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the conference, but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.

The issue will be of interest to those who work in a service-oriented business environment or interact with relevant stakeholders, i.e. customers, suppliers, maintainers, regulators and engineers.

Notes for Prospective Authors

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. (N.B. Conference papers may only be submitted if the paper has been completely re-written and if appropriate written permissions have been obtained from any copyright holders of the original paper).

All papers are refereed through a peer review process.
