Abstract: Traditionally, the turning of hardened steel is accomplished with cutting tools made of materials like ceramics, cubic boron nitride (CBN), diamond, etc. Due to advances in the coating layer, machining hard steel with carbide inserts is gaining importance. One of the critical aspects of reducing the machining cost is tool life. By optimising tool life, savings in the machining cost can be obtained. This paper proposes the method to increase the cutting tool's life by investigating the variables affecting it, i.e., cutting speed, feed, and depth of cut with the help of carbide inserts having multilayer coatings. Experiments to optimise flank wear, which is gradual wear and often correlated to tool life, were conducted using Response surface methodology. To determine the impact of these input variables on the amount of flank wear, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to the results of the experiments. A quadratic model was proposed to forecast flank wear.
