Abstract: Companies operate in an increasingly volatile and competitive environment. Surviving and achieving some success has become the focus of managers of any type of business, be it small, medium or large. Innovation is now considered one of the factors capable of leading companies to obtain a sustainable competitive advantage. However, in the universe of micro and small Brazilian companies, the word innovation is perceived as something difficult to achieve. This work aimed to investigate the critical success factors for the innovation model, including six explanatory variables: a) awareness of the enterprise for innovation; b) innovation strategy and policy; c) innovation implementation in the enterprise; d) capital (financial) investment for innovation; e) human resources for innovation; e) capacity building for innovation in the enterprise. The results show that awareness is the main element capable of promoting innovation.
