Abstract: The role of logframes is explored through consideration of the need to plan, and the need to put effort into planning. These are discussed in relation to the paradox of determinism in the planning process. The concepts of an 'ideal' plan, an 'adequate' plan and a 'formal' plan are contrasted with particular reference to the processes that deliver them and their impact on the management of initiatives. Finally these issues are placed in the specific context of managing development assistance.
