Identification of efficient production plans for a food packaging process using discrete event simulation

Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of modelling and analysing the production capacity of a food packaging process. The model is formalised using coloured Petri nets and was implemented in CPNTools. The results reported correspond to the functional verification and the state space analysis of the model for determining the availability of each packing line and the overall availability of the system. The model allows obtaining measures such as the ratio between the production time and the time available for a specific period of production under different demand scenarios, determining the effect of a different assignment of the orders among the available packing lines. The results allow identification of work schedules for the best use of the packing lines capacity. The proposed framework is tested using a real case study, where a set of several feasible production plans are generated and the best course of action among these alternatives is identified.
