Geo-environmental and human health impacts of spent lithium-ion battery waste and its recycling: a critical review

Abstract: The world is witnessing an exponential growth in electric vehicle stock and registration and there will be millions of electric vehicles on road by 2030. This increase in electric vehicles (EVs) would lead to increase the bulk of e-waste generated through the end-of-life (EoL) lithium ion batteries. This paper covers various aspect related to EV battery waste related to the present status of research in form of bibliometric survey, increase in EV numbers - statistics, effect of EV battery waste on soil, groundwater and effect of recycling Li-ion batteries on environment and human health. The study indicates that there is a need for the development of sustainable battery chemistry from an environmental perspective. The systematic review indicates a need for research in the area of developing sustainable waste management and recycling technique for EoL lithium-ion batteries from the perspective of soil, groundwater contamination, and human health impact.
