Abstract: This research builds on two primary observations. First, facilities management personnel lack expertise in building information modelling (BIM) and 3D software. Second, they often need access only to a small subset of the facility data and 3D models, rather than the full, monolithic BIM of the whole facility. These interrelated issues are addressed in proof of concept (PoC) prototypes to demonstrate their technical feasibility. The research combines design thinking methodology with agile software development to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of the PoCs. The PoCs demonstrate that a semantically rich 2D floor plan can be implemented, linked to all the BIM data, while retaining the simplicity and familiarity of the 2D-based user interface. Also, it is technically feasible to support granular 3D BIM visualisation where only context-specific 3D geometry is loaded and visualised without having to load or stream the full, monolithic BIM model.
