Abstract: The hexagonal grid arrangement structure has important application values in volume graphics. The choice of geometric model has a great influence on the effect of voxelisation. This paper proposes a new three-dimensional hexagonal grid geometry system which uses rhombic dodecahedrons as the voxels. Comparing with other geometric systems, this system has advantages in symmetry and connectivity. The definition of the adjacent voxels of the hexagonal grid 3D geometric system is unified, and the distribution of pixels is more compact. Our geometry system enables algorithms to directly exploit the geometric properties of hexagonal grid systems in 2D space. Taking the traversal of voxels along a straight line as an example, the common methods of algorithm development in the 3D hexagonal grid system are introduced as an application instance.
