Abstract: Silver kaolinite nanoparticles (Ag/Kln NPs) has been developed using gamma irradiation as reducing agent with kaolinite as a stabiliser under ambient environment. The Ag/Kln NPs produced by γ-irradiation technique are pure, well distributed and have distinct antibacterial properties. The effects of different concentrations of Ag+ and irradiation doses on the formation of NPs were studied. The produced Ag/Kln NPs has been confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, TEM and FESEM-EDX analysis. The antimicrobe susceptibility was studied to determine the antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles on Gram positive and negative bacteria as the test microorganisms. The antimicrobial properties of varying concentrations of silver nanoparticle reduced via physical synthesis using gamma irradiation were compared to those reduced chemically. Ag/Kln NPs synthesised using gamma irradiation showed significantly large zone of inhibition indicating high antimicrobial activity. The Ag/Kln NPs reduced at 20kGy demonstrated highest antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis (Gram positive) as well as Escherichia coli (Gram negative). The Ag/Kln NPs synthesised by gamma irradiation demonstrated as an effective antimicrobial agent and suitable to be applied in medical field.
