Abstract: The Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication network consists of multiple vehicles, each of which maintains a dynamic threshold. However, this threshold can cause a significant amount of overhead for the vehicles in the network. Unfortunately, the existing security solutions are inadequate to detect or prevent wormhole attacks in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). To address this issue, our paper proposes a two-level, fast and efficient wormhole detection and prevention system that uses Roadside Units (RSUs). Our solution takes into account various parameters such as mobility, geographical location and distance to identify and isolate wormhole attacker nodes. We predict the neighbouring ratio using an ARIMA model, and based on this prediction, we define a dynamic threshold value to filter the suspect wormhole attack vehicles communications from legitimate vehicle communications and assist to effectively monitor suspect wormhole attack links. We then use the hop count metric to detect and prevent the wormhole attack. Our simulations show that our proposed security solution is more effective than existing solutions in terms of throughput, Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and jitter in a hostile VANET environment.
