Abstract: The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of external and internal factors on intentions to avoid single-use plastic bags. Data were collected using online survey from 703 consumers in India using convenience sampling method. The results indicated that green advertisements, retailers' incentives, government policies (external factors), and extrinsic motivations and subjective norms (internal factors) had significant positive effects on intentions to avoid single-use plastic bags. The results of this study provide important implications to governments, policymakers, retailers, and the consumers to develop a sustainable eco-system.
